Made in 1984 but unfairly left to fester, unreleased, by way of the sheer amorality of the '80s music market, we sure hope this release of Yasuaki Shimizu's 'Kiren' finally gives this body of work the recognition it deserves. Following up his albums 'Kakashi' and 'Utakata No Hibi', this is the composer's one-off foray into experimental dance music, further showing off his work with fellow jazzers the Saxophonettes. From the cold, juddering ambience of 'Momo No Hana' to the post-punky sample dance of 'Peruvian Punk', this one's a rare and odd tidbit for the eclectic digger. -

The long awaited debut album from EDB is finally here. Like the title Japanese title Koeru suggests, the multi-instrumentalist producer surpassed his previous work and brought things to the next level. From the futuristic ballad ‘True Love’ featuring UK soulstress Summer Pearl, to the electro tones of ‘Sculptured’ and broken beat abstractions of ‘Neurocloud’, to the cosmic uplifting tones of ‘Voices From Down Under’ featuring the legendary Nathan Haines, the record shows a perfect balance between light and darkness, sophistication and rawness, smooth and angular sounds. The dancefloor moments are equally present here with Detroit’s Monica Blaire stepping in as a vocalist in ‘Automatic’, powerful instrumental deep house joints like ‘Phaze Shift’ and even a new updated version of his classic ‘This Can’t Be Life’ featuring Chicago’s very own Swaylo. A cohesive, coherent and inspiring debut album from a true talent who will guide you step by step into his world. -

Koinè is the new album by Pellegrino & Zodyaco, a record that explores the desire to escape by interpreting it as an act of emancipation, an aimless journey in search of creative freedom. The demonstration that escapism, when it is conscious, can bring us back to the heart of things. Inspired by Éloge de la fuite by Henri Laborit, the album embarks on a journey to discover a “common language” (Koinè), blending Neapolitan roots with a global and contemporary musical vision. It blends melodic traditions with disco, funk, jazz fusion, and world music, experimenting with vintage instruments, ethnic percussion, and Mediterranean atmospheres. Pellegrino, a pioneer of the “new school” Neapolitan sound, after 4 years since his last LP “Morphé” (2020) continues the path started with Zodyaco I (2018), painting an authentic portrait of modern Naples and celebrating musical contamination as a form of creative euphoria. -

Kyoko Koizumi, aka Kyon Kyon or Kyon?, was one of the most popular and best selling pop idols through the 80s & 90s and on this album, thanks to the vision of Haruo Chikada as a producer, an unlikely combination of her vocals with the burgeoning sonics of house music takes place to great effect. What must have seemed like a cultural anomaly to contemporary audiences, particularly so early into the canon of house music (this record saw the light of day in 1989), we can now retrospectively recognise that not only does this album succeed as a snapshot of the musical zeitgeist of the time - it also predicted the unification of house & dance music with commercial pop sensibilities that has remained in the culture in the decades since. However, what is happening sonically on this record goes beyond anything disposable or vapid that might come to mind when one thinks of Pop forays into house music - we are served up menacing acid lines, hip-house rhythms and even some digi-dub excursions.
