Washington, D.C. label People's Potential Unlimited (PPU) snub the usual boundaries put upon most entities in dance music, attesting instead to the limitlessness of human musical potential. Here they set another example of such accumulative panache with 'Turn It Out', the very latest vinyl EP from roster producer Bravuda, hailing from the Russian Federation. 'Turn It Out' is Bravuda's re-recording of a demo also recorded for PPU by Terry Patton and Robbie M, entitled 'Tri-Fire'; Bravuda's version is a slimy, windowlicking electro-funk Janus mask, as 'Turn It Out' and its underside '1984' both bring almost equally grumbly and wily sleights of hand, their tiny room reverbs and crushed, sculpted piano chords being of special note. -

Orlando Voorn's Frequency alias reaches back to the start of the 90s and the beginning of the Dutch techno legend's career. As has been evident from a series of releases on Clone spin-off label Repetitive Rhythmic Research the name bears plenty of inspiration for Voorn in the modern age, as he juggles vivid, sounds with impressionistic flair to create the kind of non-conformist twist on Detroit techno you might otherwise associate with Terrence Dixon. 'Turn The Light' is as sultry as it is freaky, whether you opt for the original mix or the dub. Alden Tyrell and Serge are on hand for a remix of the track which heads more directly towards gritty Euro techno intensity, leaving Voorn free to roll out a masterclass in broken beat dub techno funk on incredible B2 cut 'Space Dub Work'. -

Here's something to get the blood pumping: a deserved single release for one of the undoubted highlights of Jovonn's 2018 album "Timeless", Casio Ware collaboration "Turnin' Me Out". You'll find the pair's original version - a bouncy, slick and deep workout featuring hybrid spoken/sung vocals from Casio Ware - tucked away on side B, alongside a throbbing "Dark Dub" by Jovonn that makes great use of a dirty analogue bassline and melancholic late night chords. The headline attraction that is undoubtedly the A-side revisions by Masters at Work man Louie Vega. He delivers vocal and instrumental takes of his "Expressions NYC Mix", both of which feature looser, more swinging drums, ear-catching Rhodes solos and lashings of jazzy new synths.
