An essential Roy Ayers album blending soulful jazz roots with crisp 1970s funk. Step into the vibrant soundscape of the 1970s with “Change Up the Groove”, a hidden gem from Roy Ayers Ubiquity’s early Polygram years. Often overlooked in favor of Ayers’ bigger hits, this soulful album is a masterclass in jazz-funk fusion, capturing the essence of Ayers’ evolving style as he bridged the gap between his jazz roots and the rhythmic snap of the '70s funk revolution. From the very first track, Ayers’ signature vibes take center stage, shimmering with emotion and groove. The album leans heavily into instrumental richness, with standout contributions from jazz greats like the legendary Bernard Purdie on drums. Strings weave in and out subtly, enhancing Ayers’ already deep and textured arrangements. Highlights include the undeniable funk of ‘The Boogie Back’, a breakbeat favorite for crate-diggers and DJs (sampled by the likes of NWA, 2Pac, De La Soul…), and a lush, electrified rendition of ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’ that glows with mellow soul. The title track ‘Change Up the Groove’ delivers the kind of tightly arranged, emotionally charged funk that defined the era.

*includes insert Timely reissue of Only for the Headstrong, the seminal 12” from UK duo Psychotropic, arriving this November. Originally released in 1990 at the height of the Acid House explosion, the track quickly became a defining moment in UK dance music—melding house, breakbeat, and psychedelic pop influences into something utterly timeless. Revered by DJs, collectors, and ravers alike, Headstrong is a euphoric, genre-blurring anthem that retains a raw innocence and hypnotic pull even 35 years on. Psychotropic was formed by Gavin Mills, a rising DJ with a deep love of house and hip-hop, and Nick Nicely, a seasoned psych-pop experimentalist whose history included cult releases with Arista and EMI. The pair met during the fever pitch of late '80s rave culture—bonding over illegal warehouse parties, makeshift home studios, and a shared impulse to explore new sounds and styles. Crafted using an Akai S900 sampler, a Fostex 8-track, and a Casio CZ-101, Only for the Headstrong emerged from Nicely’s South London home studio in a single inspired session, its unforgettable loops and soaring keys capturing both the chaos and euphoria of the era. The track, and the Prince-style groove of B-side Out of Your Head, became underground hits, reaching the top of London’s independent record store charts and cementing Psychotropic’s reputation for marrying psychedelic sonic textures with club-ready grooves. Their sound stood out—rooted in DIY experimentation but elevated by emotional depth and melodic flair. Mills and Nicely’s unique chemistry would spawn further club classics like Hypnosis, Psychosis, and Feel Surreal, before diverging into solo paths in the mid-90s. Despite parting ways creatively, the duo has remained close friends, occasionally reuniting for remixes and digital reissues. Now, in 2025, Only for the Headstrong returns to vinyl in its full analog glory—remastered and recontextualized for a new generation. With freshly penned liner notes by Nic Nicely, this nostalgic reissue captures the raw, open-minded energy of a pivotal moment in UK dance music and reconnects us with the heady, DIY spirit of early rave culture.

Trystero returns with their new album Humming Fuzz on Knekelhuis — a kaleidoscopic voyage deeper into the band’s expanding cosmos. Built on plunging basslines, acid-drenched loops, and spiraling kraut-inspired guitar textures, the record drifts between hypnotic repetition and free-flowing, hallucinatory songwriting. It echoes the visionary spirit of Psychic TV and the genre-blurring universe of Weatherall, while carving out a raw, magnetic space of its own. Recorded once again on a canal barge in the North of France, Humming Fuzz feels like a natural evolution from their debut Sfumare e Vedere — denser, more alive, and charged with electricity. Now expanded with Nelly on bass and Alexia on vocals, Trystero channels this expanded energy into their wild, expressive live performances, soon to ignite audiences on their upcoming tours.

Another essential US 90s bit from Tom Chasteen and Michael Kandel originally on the Exist Dance portfolio. Well ahead of its time, this exposé of ceremonial grade psychedelic nuances featuring South Asian vocal samples interlaced with electronic music production methods takes the originally more fast passed trance-like direction of the label’s first 3 years and re-directs things towards a new more downtempo/trip-hop route. With the BPM counter cruising in the low 100’s steadily throughout the first 3 tracks and ending on a full on ambient beatless 8 minute meditative journey, this EP marks a new aesthetic plateau for the Exist Dance catalogue, with “Cantamilla” even crossing over to Balearic radars and being played by Ibiza legends like Jose Padilla. “Recorded in Heaven”. Take a trip.

Here's another worthy reissue of a Diggers classic, which had an excellent opportunity for rediscovery with a Dimitri From Paris compilation and is now being offered to us again in a rare exception to the usual hyper-obscure Italo Disco archive finds by Best Record. In fact Claudio Casalini, opting this time for "You're My Number 1" by Radiance and Andrea Stone, gets everything a boogie jam should be, from the liquid funk of the bass line to the snap of the drums. The original is fantastic, but the extended dub version on the B-side is absolutely not to be overlooked. It's impossible to stay on the ground when this pearl comes out even for those who don't know that it was mixed by the legendary team at M&M Productions with the participation of John Morales, an undisputed champion in mixing."

Imagine cycling through a Van Gogh landscape; sunflowers, blue skies, sunlight, and the wind on your skin. That's a bit how Bicycle Ride sounds like. With tender compositions like Wind on the Water and the romantic I Will Be There (featuring Juliet Klaar, who later appears on System), this is Shook at his most melodic and reflective. Piano and synth blend effortlessly, drawing influence from Japanese greats like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Joe Hisaishi, and the beat-driven sensitivity of Nujabes. A warm, heartfelt journey and perhaps his most Dutch album yet.

The idea of the project is to reconstruct a different perspective of Tribal Italia, an imprint set in 1995 in Riccione. The label recollected the attitude of the Afro/Cosmic djs of the region like Meo, Fary, Fattori and Brahms that created a distinctive ''world-sound trademark'' in whole Italy and Europe (as seen lately in the Austrian experiments of Stefan Egger). There was a side of the label that was clearly influenced by the ''heavy-sample'' culture of Hip-Hop and, especially, by what was going on in the UK where groups like Transglobal Underground and Loop Guru were creating a new identitarian imagination. These influences gave birth to a suggestive selection of the best breaks of the Tribal Italia catalogue.

Compiled by Dubby & Antal, Techno Kayo Volume One is a dancefloor-friendly selection focusing on Japanese proto-techno, electro-pop, and synthpop from the 1980s. Pressed at 45RPM. Comes with OBI and insert with liner notes. Note: This release is only available on physical format (Vinyl & CD) / no downloads will be available. In late-1970s Japan, a new and unique “genre” called techno kayo emerged, blending catchy pop melodies with the futuristic sounds of synthesizers and drum machines. Rooted in the older kayokyoku style, it was influenced by European electronic acts like Kraftwerk, but had a distinctly Japanese flair. Artists such as Yellow Magic Orchestra pioneered this retro-futuristic sound, creating music that felt both nostalgic and ahead of its time. Dubby, owner of the legendary record shop Ondas in Tokyo, was one of the first to make Japanese music available to the outside world. He has teamed up with Antal, co-founder of the Amsterdam-based, Rush Hour Records, to release the first in a series of compilations. Artwork from Johann Kauth (Stenze Quo)

Another sureshot heater from a magnificent underground label with a cult following, Adeen Records drops AR026, a landmark release uniting two titans of house music: New York's legendary Pal Joey (Joseph Longo) and Chicago's iconic voice Robert Owens. An instrumental follows, ideal for DJs keeping the vibe deep and emotive. Flip to Side B and you'll find Paolo Aniello aka New Digital Fidelity bringing the heat. When legends align, magic happens-AR026 is a future classic.
